Ashley Sellers has shared her story of the days events with us below:
"On Sunday, September 28th, 2014 the day was just like a normal day. My husband and 5 year old son, Samuel, walked outside at around 5:30p.m., while my daughter and I were still inside the house. Around 6 p.m. I was sitting in the living room and started to hear someone banging histerically on the front door. I ran outside to see what was going on and that's when I saw my husband holding my son on the ground screaming "call 911 and get me towels!" I ran inside and called 911, the woman on the other end asked me all these questions about what was going on and what had happened. By that point I was a wreck. I tried to stay calm for my daughter who was still at home. I told the dispatcher that my husband accidentally ran over my son with the riding lawnmower. She then asked if he was conscience and breathing? I said yes. While I looked at my son, lying there on the ground, I saw my husband, a volunteer fire fighter, went in to 'rescue mode'.
I was still crying. My neighbor also heard all the screaming and brought towels over and helped my husband hold pressure on my Samuel's leg and arm. The paramedics, fire engine, and police were there within minutes. As a mom that was a very scary thing. While I got my daughter from my neighbors house they were putting Samuel in to the rescue truck to transport him by life flight helicopter to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - Egelston.
Once I got to Egelston, I went to the Trauma Room, there was my son, Samuel, hooked up to all these machines. He was conscience and breathing, they were waiting on a operating room to open up. I spent alot of time waiting and praying that everything was going to be ok. Meanwhile, my husband was very hysterical. Later on they came out around 12:15 a.m. saying surgery went great and that he didnt have any broken legs. He had two broken fingers on his right hand with some torn ligaments, while his right leg got the brunt of it.
We have been in the hospital for 9 days so far waiting to see if my son has to have a skin graph done on his right leg. He has been going through physical therapy since Tuesday. Since then we've learned he will need surgery. What a big strong boy he has been. I just pray for a speedy recovery for my little boy. The lesson to be learned is to always keep kids inside the house when mowing. Being here in this situation, we have learned a lot. I pray no one has to go through what we have been through. It could have been worse. My husband saved my sons life and he has been off work to be here with our son and the family. Thank you to everyone for prayers and get well wishes for my son."
